Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking the plunge into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back, I see a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and more intimidating challenges I encountered was making friends. This is undeniably one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest apprehensions. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term beginning, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too intimidated to go out and meet others. Nevertheless, as I sit here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversation with individuals experiencing similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and activities will help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With such a diverse array of people in the course and university, you’re bound to discover those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle I needed to surmount was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and to some extent, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are others who also struggle to understand. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek support from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s indeed one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance that is provided to you. You can never have too much!
Generally speaking, this year has enlightened me to the fact that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated by the multitude of support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself in the midst of stressors like exams and deadlines.
