Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved character was suited for. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be one of your top concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the full day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I grasp? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re sure to come across individuals similar to you.

A further challenge was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things aided me in overcoming that sense, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee there are others who are equally confused. So, seek assistance. This may be one of the most crucial lessons to learn in your first year. Request help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is incredible. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke about taking leaps earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the resources that are available to you. You can never ask for too much help!

On a broader scale, this year has illuminated the fact that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are generally unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to savor my experiences alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
