Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating trials was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the more formidable parts of beginning university, and if you’re considering attending, it might be among your foremost concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone else. Today, though, I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with a bit of casual conversation with people facing similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like you.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inferior. Several things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you find something unclear, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your colleagues and instructors!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and keep constant communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that anxious feelings, both prior to and throughout university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
