By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly timid self was familiar with. Looking back on the previous academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is typically a significant worry for newcomers to university. On my first day at my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to socialize. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the strongest bonds here at university and within my course. I discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others navigating similar experiences. I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is essential. If you feel unprepared, don’t be concerned—there are numerous ice-breakers and events available to assist you in connecting with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With so many unique individuals, you’re sure to encounter those who align with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel inadequate when it looks like everyone else is grasping the material more swiftly. Keep in mind that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. Seeking assistance is crucial in the first year—reach out to classmates and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They maintain ongoing dialogue regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to build connections with the staff—a significant advantage. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best actions you can take. Take full advantage of the support available; you can never have enough!
This year has shown me that anxious feelings regarding university are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst the pressure of exams and deadlines.
