Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester started, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Sitting here today, however, I can confidently state that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small talk with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I realized that it’s always best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. There are so many diverse individuals across the course and university; you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting doesn’t always boost your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in navigating that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re struggling with something, I can almost assure you there are others who also find it challenging. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during the first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support being provided to you. You can never have too much support!
In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always without basis and can be eased by the abundant support options available from the staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
