By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This surely ranks among the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may well be one of your top worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, as I sit here, I can proudly assert that I have made some of my closest friends right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some light conversation with others facing similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I take away? I discovered that it’s always wise to take a plunge at the start of the academic year. If you’re not quite feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With the diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re guaranteed to find people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a definite leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be taxing on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying diligently and feel inadequate in comparison. A few factors aided me in navigating those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are several others who are also confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire to see you succeed and understand that students encounter challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this segment of university life is to seize the help that is being extended to you. You can never receive too much support!

Broadly, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased with the variety of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has instructed me on how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
