Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize it as a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most daunting challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be among your largest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the best friends I could hope for, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I come to understand? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking activities and events to foster connections with others. I also discovered that above all, you should just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are certain to meet people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of coursework and the complexity of the material. There was absolutely a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that we are all in the same situation. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you there are others who feel the same way. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They are understanding of student difficulties and maintain ongoing communication with us during the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for your welfare! My primary takeaway from this part of university life is to make the most of the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased through the various support mechanisms provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never truly alone and has shown me how to embrace enjoyment despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
