By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about the path ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown wasn’t something my previously shy and reserved self was ready for. Reflecting back, I can see a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most stressful hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be at the forefront of your worries. On my first day moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take the initiative at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that above all else, it’s essential to be yourself. With such a diverse array of people within the program and university, you’re certain to meet individuals who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, a more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me manage that feeling, one of which was the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can almost bet that several others are as well. Hence, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support systems available until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did so early in the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance being provided. You can never have an excess of support!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are usually unfounded and can be alleviated with the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has guided me on how to enjoy life amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
