Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was not something my once-timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as one rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was the task of forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of stepping out and introducing myself to others. Yet, as I sit here now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what lesson did I glean? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or comfortable, that’s perfectly okay! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. The variety of individuals spanning the course and university ensures that you will encounter people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle I had to navigate was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels was notable, and in some aspects, the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; witnessing others study might lead you to feel inadequate. I found solace in several reminders, one being that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something puzzles you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are equally confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to our struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I initially mentioned taking leaps – I did embrace one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is an extremely valuable experience. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!
Overall, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are generally unfounded and can be mitigated through the multitude of support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to find joy amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
