Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of embarking on university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodations, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room because I was too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, both here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve realized that it’s crucial to take a leap right at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge I had to navigate was the volume of work and the complexity of the subjects. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is on a similar journey as you. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who are also struggling to comprehend it. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most critical lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from both your classmates and the staff!

This transitions me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has illuminated that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and has shown me how to find joy alongside stresses like exams and deadlines.
