Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This element is frequently one of the most daunting parts of embarking on university life, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be among your largest worries. On my first day entering my accommodation, a few days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Currently, I can assert with confidence that I’ve fostered some of the finest friendships I’ve experienced during my time here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning from simple conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fear not! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and activities will help you form connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional trial was the magnitude of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s almost certain that others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding any concerns we may have. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – and I took a significant one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to build relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and this is undeniably one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university is to seize the assistance available. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and demonstrated how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
