Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and if you’re contemplating this path, it might be a concern for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, right before the term commenced, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships during my time here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from initiating brief conversations with others in similar situations. What has this taught me? It’s beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities to aid in connecting with others. Also, stay true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and the university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct transition from A-levels, and an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can test your confidence; you might sense inadequacy in comparison to your peers. A few strategies assisted me through this period, one of which was the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, there’s a good chance others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from both peers and staff!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open channels of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until the end of the year, but I truly wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson learned is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of help!

All in all, this year has illustrated that the anxious feelings regarding university are frequently exaggerated and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It revealed to me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
