Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and significant enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this year, and how do I find myself now?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of initiating university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your top worries. On my first day settling into my accommodations, just days before the term began, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what wisdom did I gain? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is invariably beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be authenticity. With a broad range of people within the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging to your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same situation. So, seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources until late in the year, but I wish I had engaged with them earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I embraced one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my class. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My paramount takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have an excess of help!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be eased through the various support resources from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
