Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re an aspiring student, it may be among your top anxieties. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. What have I learned? It’s ideal to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a varied population across the course and university, you are sure to meet those who align with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What I found helpful was recalling that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are also grappling with it. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson of the first year. Seek guidance from both classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication regarding our issues. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not accessing it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps—I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key lesson is to leverage the support provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated through the resources available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
