Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, trials, and plenty of enjoyment! What lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This can be one of the most apprehensive parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day isolating in my room, too intimidated to step outside and interact with others. Now, I can confidently state that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever made, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with a bit of casual conversation with individuals in comparable circumstances. What did I learn? It’s advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. Furthermore, if you can embody one quality, be your true self. With such a variety of people across the program and university, you’re sure to find like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel lesser. A few strategies assisted me in navigating this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties students encounter. They resonate with student struggles and sustain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role permitted me to build rapport with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to establish connections with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
