Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Facing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too intimidated to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can influence your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was remembering that everyone is navigating the same circumstance. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others find it challenging as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for assistance from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the hurdles faced by students. They relate to us and keep open lines of communication regarding our issues. I didn’t completely take advantage of the support services until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had started earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I embraced one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own growth! My primary lesson is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often groundless and can be eased by the support available from staff and peers. I’ve discovered that I am never alone and learned how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
