### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich in growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments, I recognize just how much I’ve achieved. So, what did this year teach me, and what is my current status?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

A major challenge I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be anxious about it as well. On my first day at student accommodation, just days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some incredible friendships. These relationships have become like a second family to me, both within my course and throughout the university. What was the key to my success? It all commenced with small conversations and finding common ground with others who were equally apprehensive.

The most significant lesson I learned is that taking the initiative at the start of the year is worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or uneasy at first, that’s perfectly fine! There are abundant icebreakers and activities designed to facilitate connections. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the rigorous workload and the elevated complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Being in such a challenging academic setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when observing others studying while feeling as though you’re lagging behind.

What helped me through those tough times was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or faculty. This is perhaps the most critical skill to hone in your first year.

#### Assistance from the Staff

Speaking of support, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely want you to thrive and are fully aware of the hurdles students encounter. They are compassionate and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to address any worries.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available to me until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best decisions I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved immensely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting to know the staff is one of the best moves you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support systems made available to you—you can never receive too much help!

#### Insights Gained

This year has illustrated to me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There are numerous resources and support structures available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming the obstacles. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely feasible to balance academic pressure with moments of enjoyment and relaxation.

Looking back, I take pride in how much I’ve evolved, and I’m eager to discover what the upcoming year has in store.
