**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was set to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, venturing into the unknown seemed incredibly intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of immense transformation—filled with personal development, challenges, and abundant joy. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Connections

Among the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might relate—it’s entirely normal. On my very first day moving into accommodations, I remained in my room throughout the day, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. The very thought of meeting new faces felt insurmountable.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and throughout the university. The pivotal moment? Simply taking a chance and initiating small dialogues with individuals who were feeling equally anxious as I was.

What have I derived from this experience? Firstly, it’s worthwhile to leap into those interactions early, even if it feels daunting. If you’re not quite ready to engage from the outset, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with peers. Secondly, the most authentic version of yourself is the best you can offer. Given the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with who you are.

### Adapting to the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was acclimating to the demands of the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or second-guess your capabilities when you observe others diligently studying and appearing to have it all under control.

What guided me through this phase was the understanding that everyone experiences similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, there’s a good chance others share that confusion as well. The essential step is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. This realization stands out as the most pivotal lesson I embraced during my initial year.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of faculty, the support framework within the Materials department is outstanding. The staff genuinely aspire for students to thrive and empathize with the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year, making sure we feel valued and supported.

While I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Engaging with staff—whether formally or informally—remains one of the best actions you can take for your university experience.

My primary lesson? Leverage the resources available to you. You can never have an excess of support.

### Insights Gained

In reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. An abundance of support systems exists, from faculty to peers, that can alleviate those concerns. This year has enlightened me to the fact that I’m never truly solitary and that balancing enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines is feasible.

As I look to the future, I feel more assured and ready for what lies ahead. My first year at Imperial has been a journey of growth, and I eagerly anticipate what the future has in store.
