Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future as I commenced my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re a potential student, it could be of significant concern. On my initial day settling into accommodation, just prior to the term starting, I stayed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can affirmatively say I’ve developed some of the most remarkable friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, that’s okay! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with peers. Also, just be yourself. With a wide array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to meet those who share your mindset.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and it was even more pronounced from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be hard on your self-esteem; you might feel insufficient when compared to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you struggle with something, chances are others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your well-being! My primary message is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings about university are frequently unjustified and can be eased with the support accessible from faculty and other students. It has demonstrated that I am never solitary and how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
