Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my hall, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too intimidated to step out and meet others. Now, I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the best friends here at university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, all from engaging in small conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that launching into socializing at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t panic! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can be difficult for your self-esteem; you may see others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate those feelings, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is sharing the same experience. If you’re struggling with something, I can virtually guarantee there are others who feel the same. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned earlier the importance of taking chances – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are various ways to bond with staff, and it is one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

All in all, this year has imparted to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the myriad of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to have fun even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
