Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was a time of personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my status now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it could be one of your foremost concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assuredly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and all it took was initiating casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is usually the best approach. If you don’t feel perfectly ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking activities and events to facilitate engagement with others. I’ve also realized that if you can embody anything, be genuine. There’s a vast array of individuals within the course and the university; you’re sure to connect with peers like yourself.

Another obstacle I needed to tackle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly noticeable, and in some aspects, the leap from the first term to the second was even greater. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for self-esteem; you might see your peers studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the assurance that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that at least a few others are also grappling with it. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask for assistance from your classmates and instructors!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. Holding this role allowed me to build relationships with faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and doing so is definitely one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this university aspect is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated by the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
