Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your main worry. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes, I remained in my room all day, too anxious to go out and meet new people. However, today I can assertively say I’ve forged some of my closest friendships at university and within my course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I grasp? It’s beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or comfortable, that’s alright! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of people in the course and at the university, you’re sure to find like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the challenging workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even steeper elevation from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel out of place. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, others likely are as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Reach out to peers and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They relate to our experiences and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral care until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for your well-being! My primary insight is to seize the help that is available. You can never have too much support!
In conclusion, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness before and during university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself in spite of pressures such as examinations and deadlines.
