Nine months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about my future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not a usual experience for my previously timid self. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! What have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often a significant worry for newcomers to university. On my inaugural day in my residence, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Yet, today I can proudly claim I’ve forged some of the best friendships at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. I found that taking a chance at the year’s outset is essential. If you’re not prepared, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaking events are available to facilitate connections with fellow students. Moreover, if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. Considering the diverse array of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first term to the second. This environment can test your self-esteem; you may feel inferior compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you struggle with a concept, others most likely do as well. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might just be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are wonderful. They genuinely want you to thrive and are empathetic to student difficulties. They keep communication open with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with faculty members—an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and this is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to make full use of the assistance available. You can never have excessive support!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are often unfounded and can be eased with the aid accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and how to find joy even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
