Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not familiar territory for my previously shy and reserved self. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time rich in personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted upon me, and where do I currently stand?

One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. This certainly ranks as one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, overwhelmed by the prospect of venturing out to introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly okay! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events are available to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that above all, you should remain true to yourself. With the diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you will certainly meet people who resonate with your vibe.

Another significant challenge I had to tackle was the pressure from the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can impact one’s confidence; you might observe others studying and begin to question your own abilities. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar struggles. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I’d done so earlier. As I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I made one at the year’s onset by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This experience allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most beneficial things you can do for your own advancement! My key insight from this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the support offered to you. You can never receive too much assistance!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be diminished with the array of support mechanisms available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
