By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of embarking on university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a considerable worry for you. On the very first day of settling into my new accommodation, just days before classes started, I sequestered myself in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, starting from brief conversations with others in similar circumstances. What have I realized? Taking initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities designed to help you connect with fellow students. Also, embrace your true self. With a wide array of diverse individuals in your program and throughout the university, you are sure to find people who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was noticeable, and in some respects, the transition from the first term to the second was even more substantial. Being in such a challenging environment can impact your confidence; witnessing others study might lead you to feel inadequate. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something perplexes you, it’s likely that others share that confusion as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be one of the most vital lessons to grasp in your freshman year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The staff in the Materials department are extraordinary. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend the challenges students endure. They are empathetic and maintain consistent communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the academic year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to form connections with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your path! My key takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university life, are often baseless and can be eased through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
