Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was something my previously introverted and reserved self found challenging. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This tends to be one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet anyone. However, today I can confidently affirm that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what lesson did I absorb? I grasped that it’s always advantageous to make a leap at the year’s inception. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, fret not! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and level of difficulty of the material. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less competent. What intrigued me was the reminder that everyone shares the same challenges. If you’re grappling with something, I can almost assure you there are others who are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to take away from your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and uphold continuous communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to establish relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the help available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
