Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not what my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I felt too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it only required a bit of casual conversation with others in similar situations. So, what have I understood? I realized it’s always advisable to make a move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. There are an array of different individuals throughout the program and university; you’re sure to come across people just like you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting is not always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me combat that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Ask for help from your peers and the faculties!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be eased with the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I am never alone, and it has guided me in enjoying myself in the midst of stressors like exams and deadlines.
