Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Diving into unfamiliar territory wasn’t something my once shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of entering university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day hiding in my room because I felt too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Sitting here now, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had here at this university and in this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in small conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, be genuine. There are so many diverse individuals in the course and university; you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always a boost for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing this journey together. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are equally confused. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to master in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain regular communication with us about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much of it!

In a broader sense, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has shown me how to have fun alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
