Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Stepping into the unknown was foreign territory for someone who had always been quite reserved. Looking back at the previous academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect can be quite daunting when commencing university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I isolated myself in my room for the entire day, too daunted to venture out and mingle. Today, I can assertively say that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships during my time here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. What have I taken away from this? It’s beneficial to take that initial leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events exist to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be authentic. Amongst all the diverse individuals at the university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another significant hurdle was the heaviness of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Navigating such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel less capable compared to peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are in the same situation. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to both peers and staff for help!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges faced by students. They show understanding and keep the lines of communication open throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make use of pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s beginning, I took on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which is priceless. There are various methods to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that apprehensions about university life are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has informed me that I am never isolated and how to derive enjoyment from my experience despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
