Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons have I garnered this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was developing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome aspects of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your major worries. On the very first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, far too daunted to step outside and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I realize? I discovered that taking a chance at the start of the year is always the best course of action. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to aid in socializing with others. I also found that if there’s one thing to embody, it’s to be yourself. With such diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What carried me through this sentiment was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same struggle. If something is unclear, I can nearly assure you that others are puzzled too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep us informed throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully capitalize on the supports available until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role helped me connect with the staff, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this element of university is to seize the assistance provided. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
