By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not a territory my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This can be daunting when entering university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly affirm that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, with beginnings rooted in casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s advisable to take a chance right at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With the diverse community throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you may feel inferior in comparison to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely unclear to others as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most critical skill to cultivate in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and instructors!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize and offer ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully capitalize on the available support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have excessive support!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unwarranted and can be eased by the support offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never alone and have learned how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
