In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was ready for. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most challenging tasks was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your major worries. On my first day moving into housing, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Now, I can confidently state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated from casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and the university, you are sure to find people who share your mindset.

Another challenge was the amount of work and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-confidence; you might notice others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating through similar circumstances. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They are sympathetic to our struggles and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it ranks among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the help available. You can never have too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
