Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back, I see a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my moving day, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time cloistered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was striking up conversations with fellow students who were in similar scenarios. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve learned that it’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be myriad ice-breaking occasions and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to discover those who align with you.

Another challenge was coping with the workload and the level of difficulty in the content. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can test your self-assurance; witnessing others study might make you feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are also struggling. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for support from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the obstacles students face. They connect with us and consistently communicate throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to get acquainted with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently exaggerated and can be mitigated with the support resources accessible from faculty and peers. It has shown me that I’m never solitary and how to relish my time while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
