Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting components of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, just a few days ahead of the start of classes, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself. However, today I can assert that I have developed some of the closest friendships I have ever experienced, both at this university and in my program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you aren’t quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaker activities to help you connect with others. I also learned that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and the university, you are certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the level of difficulty in the material. There was indeed a significant increase compared to A-levels, and in some instances, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel like you don’t measure up. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can nearly promise that others are experiencing the same confusion. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to prosper and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding towards students and keep ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had made use of them earlier. I previously spoke about taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can’t ever have too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various sources of support from both faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
