Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This can often be one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and for any prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire time in my room, too fearful to venture out and socialize. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp something, chances are others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to both classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties that students encounter. They empathize and maintain open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking risks previously – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to seize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated with the support offered by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never alone and taught me how to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
