Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Jumping straight in was not an action my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I see a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most overwhelming challenges was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most intimidating when embarking on university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be one of your major concerns. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and greet others. As I sit here now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embrace one thing, it’s being yourself. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for one’s self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If something eludes your comprehension, I can almost assure you that there are at least several other individuals who also find it unclear. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your freshman year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They want you to succeed and are aware that students face difficulties. They connect with us consistently throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had recognized its value sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are ample opportunities to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the support available to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!
Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has guided me on how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
