Approximately ten months ago, in October of 2022, I was overcome with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I realize I have experienced a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and joy! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the initial and most formidable hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university life, and if you are a prospective student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On the very first day of moving into my accommodation, just prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too fearful to step outside and engage with others. Yet today, I can assertively say that I’ve developed some of the most amazing friendships here, at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which started with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what has been my takeaway? I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and the university, you are sure to encounter those who share your interests.
Another obstacle was juggling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an academic setting can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most critical lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to both your peers and faculty for support!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and engage in regular communication with us about our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your personal development! My primary lesson is to make the most of the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
In summation, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the many support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never solitary and taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
