Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On moving-in day, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was the amount of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. A few strategies helped me handle that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares similar struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing the same confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. As I mentioned before about making bold moves – I took one early on by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is invaluable. There are countless ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and investing in these relationships is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the support you’re provided. You can never have too much!
Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unjustified and can be soothed by the myriad of support options available from staff and peers. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
