Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal growth, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be at the forefront of your worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too intimidated to step out and meet others. Yet today, I can assertively state that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in light conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s best to take a leap at the outset of the year. If you’re not feeling fully prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and activities to facilitate connections with fellow students. I also learned that if you can be anything at all, be authentic. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the challenge of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the subsequent one. Being placed in such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A couple of things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and realize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to get to know the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support being offered to you. You can never have an excess of it!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be eased with the multitude of support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
