Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my once-timid self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect can often be one of the most nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might be a significant worry. On the very first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s wise to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, do not fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. Also, just be yourself. With a wide array of personalities in the course and university, you’re certain to meet like-minded people.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a scenario can impact your self-esteem; you might feel less capable compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something confusing, there’s a good chance others do too. Thus, seek assistance. This is arguably the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier. I mentioned making bold moves – I took one by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance that is available. One can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has illustrated that apprehensive feelings about university are frequently baseless and can be alleviated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never isolated and has taught me how to have fun despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
