Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current situation?
One of the most immediate and formidable hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day of moving into my residence, just a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent an entire day cloistered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet people. However, today, I can proudly say I have forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to understand? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to help you connect with others. I also came to understand that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
An additional obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always favorable for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few things supported me during that phase, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most essential lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I indeed took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to interact with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the available help. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has illuminated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the myriad of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
