Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as one filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered over the year, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most overwhelming obstacles was forming friendships. This definitely stands out as one of the more daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may well be among your top worries. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the beginning of the term, I found myself spending the entire day secluded in my room due to my apprehension about stepping out to meet others. Now, sitting here today, I can state with confidence that I have forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you find yourself feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. There are myriad individuals across the course and university; you are sure to connect with those who share your interests.
An additional challenge was the heavy workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and in many respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence; you might notice others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. I spoke about taking chances at the start; I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the greatest steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!
In a broader sense, this year has enlightened me to the fact that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the ample support options offered by faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never isolated, and I’ve discovered how to balance enjoyment amidst stressful factors such as exams and deadlines.
