Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I observe a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gathered this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a major worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, though, I can affirm that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that initiating conversation at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker chances and events designed to help you engage with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few approaches assisted me through that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are others who also find it confusing. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students face. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has illuminated that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to embrace enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
