By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting facets of embarking on university life, and if you are an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day holed up in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s beneficial to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t despair! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered the importance of being true to yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who share your mindset.
Another obstacle was the demanding workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you may observe others engaged in study and feel inadequate. What supported me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson learned in the first year. Reach out for support from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty members in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to achieve and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They demonstrate empathy and maintain open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I did not make full use of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I referred to taking chances earlier – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and it’s among the best things you can do for your own benefit! My principal takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
