Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and quiet self was used to. Now, looking back, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This can be one of the most nerve-wracking parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too scared to step outside and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all starting from casual chats with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to aid you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
Another obstacle was balancing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things assisted me in overcoming this feeling, one being the realization that everyone is on the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, it’s nearly certain that others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter obstacles. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication about our concerns throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to get acquainted with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the support provided. You can never have an excess of assistance!
All in all, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone and how to have a good time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
