Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and for future students, it might be a primary concern. On my initial day of moving into accommodation, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and interact with others. Nevertheless, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in like circumstances. So, what’s the lesson I took away? I realized that taking that first step at the year’s onset is always the best approach. If you feel unprepared or uncomfortable, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, being yourself is paramount. With a diverse array of individuals across the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
A further challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being thrown into such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A couple of things helped me manage that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re grappling with something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Request help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s outset by serving as a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and this is one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually baseless and can be eased with the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has illuminated that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
