Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what was ahead as I prepared to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in such new experiences wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I realize that it was filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it might be among your most significant concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before the term began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive about stepping out and introducing myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can say with conviction that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life at this university and in this program. I have cultivated a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in some light conversation with others who were in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I discovered that taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling somewhat unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous social activities and events will be available to help you connect with others. I’ve also realized that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and university, you’re bound to connect with those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I overcame was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a competitive environment can sometimes shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to our struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best investments in yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully embrace the support offered. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated with the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to find joy amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
