Around ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was far from my naturally timid and reserved demeanor. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student, it could be your biggest concern. On my first day of moving into my housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room as I found the prospect of meeting new people far too daunting. However, I can now assert that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I glean? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and university, you are certain to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such circumstances can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the assurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly guarantee that others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are truly exceptional. They are committed to your success and understand the difficulties students face. They show empathy towards students and maintain continual communication with us regarding our struggles throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I spoke earlier about taking risks – I took one at the year’s beginning by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support you receive. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to enjoy myself despite the stresses associated with exams and deadlines.
