Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was ready for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term kicking off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can affirm that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? I realized that starting the year with a leap of faith is always a great idea. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t panic! There will be numerous ice-breaker occasions and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be authentic. With such a variety of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the demands of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in coping with those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something seems unclear, I can almost assure you there are several others who also find it perplexing. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek guidance from classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to our struggles and keep up consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson regarding this aspect of university is to make the most of the help offered to you. You can never have too much support!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are usually baseless and can be eased with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
