By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was initiating my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my usually reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I can see a journey marked by personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just prior to the term’s start, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both within this university and my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all stemming from initiating small talks with individuals in comparable situations. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a plunge at the year’s outset. If you’re not prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breaking events will be available to facilitate your connections with others. Additionally, be authentic. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels and an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being amidst such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe peers studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If something eludes your understanding, it’s likely that others are in the same situation. Therefore, seek assistance. This is perhaps the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and understand the challenges students endure. They show empathy and maintain ongoing dialogue regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to bond with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are various avenues to connect with the staff, and that is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the available support. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
